California American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, provides high-quality and reliable water and wastewater services to more than 690,000 people.

One of California American’s ongoing water supply development projects is the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project, designed to meet the region’s water demands in a sustainable and long-term manner. The project consists of several components, including desalination.

For the desalination component, seawater will be drawn from the ocean through slant wells drilled near the tide line. The seawater will filter down through the ocean floor and be collected via the slant wells, then piped to a desalination treatment plant to be constructed near the Monterey One Water Regional Treatment Plant.

At the plant, the seawater will undergo several treatment processes, including reverse osmosis, to remove impurities. The salt concentrate removed during the process will be blended with other treated effluent and returned to the ocean through the existing outfall at the Monterey One Water Regional Treatment Plant.
