Since 1914, the Alameda County Water District (ACWD) has served the communities of Fremont, Newark, and Union City, encompassing a nearly 105-square-mile service area. ACWD provides water to approximately 342,000 customers through a diverse supply portfolio that includes the State Water Project, the San Francisco PUC, its own local watershed, and treatment of brackish groundwater at its Newark Desalination Facility.
The Newark Desalination Facility began operations in September 2003 and utilizes a reverse osmosis membrane filtration process to treat brackish groundwater. Initially, the facility produced up to 5 MGD (million gallons per day) of permeate water. Following an expansion completed in August 2010, production capacity doubled to 10 MGD, contributing to a total blended output of 12.5 MGD to the distribution system.
